What options are available to straighten crooked teeth?
Dr. Tamura offers many options for straightening crooked teeth. The option that is best for you will depend on how crooked your teeth are before we start and what your goals are for your orthodontic treatment.
The three major ways that Dr. Tamura can straighten your crooked teeth are:
- Instant Orthodontics
- Clear Aligner Therapy (Invisalign)
- Straight Wire Orthodontics
What is instant orthodontics?
For patients who don’t want to wait 6 to 24 months to straighten their teeth, an option may be a treatment we call “Instant Orthodontics.” Depending on the positioning of your teeth, you may have the type of problem that can be corrected with Instant Orthodontics.
In two appointments, two weeks apart, you can have the perfectly aligned, straight teeth you have always dreamed of.

What is clear aligner?
If you have mild to moderate crowding or spacing of your teeth, you may be a candidate for Clear Aligner Therapy, like Invisalign. Impressions are taken of your teeth and a series of Clear Aligners are created by a dental laboratory, each one moves the teeth approximately .5mm over a two week period. Every two weeks, you change the Clear Aligners and your teeth are slowly moved, over time from crooked to straight. What is Straight Wire Orthodontics?
For patients with moderate to severe crooked teeth, Dr. Tamura may suggest that your teeth would be best straightened using what is called Straight Wire Orthodontics. This is basically the same technique that has been used by orthodontists for many years, however with the advancement of high tech metallurgy and white/tooth colored brackets you can have your teeth straightened without the unappealing “metal braces” your friends had in junior high school.
Straight wire orthodontics begins with Nickel Titanium archwires. These wires, made of a high tech metal alloy, are designed in the shape of a perfect dental arch. When deformed, they will always return to their original arch form shape.
Brackets, either metal or white, are then placed on the teeth and the Nickel Titanium archwire is threaded through each bracket.
As the Nickel Titanium archwire returns to its original ideal arch form, it pulls the teeth with it, so that after the teeth stop moving, their position relative to each other, is that of an ideal dental arch.

How soon will I see results?
It depends. Generally, the more crooked your teeth are before we start the longer it will take to straighten your teeth.
How long do the results last?
All patients who undergo any kind of tooth moving orthodontic treatment need to wear retainers. Initially, you will need to wear your retainers all the time, but shortly thereafter, you will switch to just wearing your retainers at night. If you wear your retainers as prescribed by Dr. Tamura, have regular check ups and get your teeth cleaned on a regular basis, your straight teeth should last a lifetime.
